Excellence in Leadership Award
Sheriff Phil Stammitti has been involved in police work for over 41 years and truly enjoys this line of work and interacting with people. He states “We are public servants and the staff and I are here to serve you, the citizenry. The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office and all Sheriffs have the tradition and honor of serving the citizens of this great Country.”
Born and raised in the city of Lorain and he presently resides in Brownhelm Township. The 3rd oldest of 9 children, 5 girls and 4 boys, he graduated from Lorain High School in 1968 and joined the United States Navy, where he proudly served for 4 years. After being honorably discharged in 1972 he enrolled at Lorain County Community College in Police Science. He took the Lorain Police examination in 1972 and was hired as a patrolman in April of 1973. He proudly served the citizens of Lorain for 13 years as a Lorain Police Officer.
Stammitti was asked to join the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office by former and retired Sheriff Martin J. Mahony, where his career escalated. He was promoted to Lieutenant and placed in charge of the Detective Bureau. In 1988 he was promoted to Captain and placed in charge of Personnel/Administration. In 1990 he was then placed in charge of the Law Enforcement Division. In 1992 he was placed in charge of the Jail Division and Administration/Personnel. In November of 2000, he was elected by the citizens of Lorain County to serve as Sheriff. He has been re-elected three times and is currently serving his fourth term as the Sheriff of Lorain County.
Phil is happily married to Mary Jo Stammitti (nee: DeAngelis) and is the proud father of four daughters, Toni, Monica, Valerie, and Jessica (Deceased). He thanks the community again for electing him Sheriff, and promises to serve to the best of his abilities.
